St Stephen, dressed in green deacon’s vestments, holds a book in his right hand and holds aloft a stone in his left. He stands on a grassy mound with stylised oak trees behind him, between the pillars of an architectural canopy. Under his feet is the inscription S(AN)C(TUS) ST[EOPHA]N(US) in Lombardic capitals. Golden hawks and green parrots decorate the outer borders.St Stephen, deacon and the first Christina martyr, was revered at an altar at the east end of the north quire aisle. His death by stoning was witnessed by Saul/St Paul, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (6-7).
