In the second century, the British King Lucius wrote to Pope Eleutherius (1f) asking to be made a Christian. He converted the temple into the first Christian Church. Bede popularised this story in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Aurelius Ambrosius, brother of Uther Pendragon, was famed as the second founder of York. King Arthur was in remembered in York as the protector of the church.
