In 627 the Anglo-Saxon King Edwin was baptised by St Wilfrid and soon thereafter began to build a stone church. King Oswald, King of Northumbria, completed the church started by Edwin, and was martyred at the hands of the pagan Penda. The third King has long been identified as Edgar, but this identification remains tentative.
