The Kings represent the three great royal dynasties of England, up to the beginning of the period of the choir’s reconstruction. The recent deposition and death of Richard II and the rebellion of Archbishop Richard Scrope, had created a period of political sensitivity which is neatly side-stepped here by the inclusion of Thorseby’s great patron Edward III, grand-father of both Plantagenet King Richard and his Lancastrian successor, Henry IV. It is actually King Henry’s arms that sit beneath Edward’s feet.
