St Stephen, dressed in his deacon’s vestments, his hands bound in front of him, is led before the seated high priest by two soldiers dressed in plate armour. While one armoured man kneels facing the high priest, the kneeling man in the centre turns back and claps his hands to his mouth in amazement, as St Stephen is described as having had the face of an angel as he refuted the charges, one by one.
