The Penitencer’s Window

1a Grisaille Panel with the Keys of the See of York

The grisaille here now consists of copies of 14th-century oak-leaf quarries, some pieces of medieval grisaille, and other fragments, including plain glass. The central section of the panel, which presumably originally contained an archbishop like those in rows 4 and 7, now features glass inserted in the early 1830s: two keys in saltire azure surmounted by a crown or, for the see of York. Penitencer borders (see introduction).
