On the left is the nimbed figure of St John who, like the Virgin in 5a, is turned away. His head is an insertion. In the middle and facing St John is the centurion (sometimes identified as Longinus) holding a spear in his left hand and with his right hand gesturing towards the centre to indicate that the crucified Christ was the Son of God. Behind the centurion is a bearded holding a crutch. St John’s and the centurion’s faces are replacements.
