This panel shows the death of St Aidan, who lies in bed on the right. Above, his soul is carried to heaven by two angels. Next to the bed, a priest is administering the last rites, assisted by an acolyte who holds his prayer book and observed by a doctor. The panel would originally have followed panel 7d, which shows St Cuthbert in a field, watching sheep, at the moment when he saw St Aidan’s soul carried to heaven.
