This panel shows St Cuthbert preaching from a pulpit to a congregation of laypeople, while he was a prior. Travelling to preach to local and remote communities was an important duty of Anglo-Saxon churchmen. Cuthbert is said to have spent much time preaching across the north of England, both when he was a prior and later when he was a bishop.
