This panel is the first of two which show St Cuthbert being provided with food by an eagle, when travelling to preach. On the left, St Cuthbert is shown predicting that an eagle will provide him and his young assistant with food. On the right, Cuthbert’s assistant is shown retrieving a fish that the eagle has dropped for them, fulfilling Cuthbert’s prophecy.
