This panel shows St Cuthbert, accompanied by a monk and a priest, preaching to high status laypeople, ahead of his election as bishop. Travelling to preach to local and remote communities was an important duty of Anglo-Saxon churchmen. Cuthbert is said to have spent much time preaching across the north of England, both when he was a prior and later when he was a bishop.
