This panel shows St Cuthbert building his hermitage on Farne with the assistance of an angel. Although Bede describes the angel helping Cuthbert to lift heavy undressed stones, here they are shown using a pair of compasses and a square to set out a dressed stone wall, probably to make their actions clear to the fifteenth-century viewer.
