This panel is one of two showing St Cuthbert performing good works after his election as bishop of Lindisfarne. In both the Anglo-Saxon period and the fifteenth century, charitable acts were an important duty for clerics, especially bishops. Here, St Cuthbert is shown distributing money to the poor and disabled. He is helped by a monk, who holds a purse. The two laymen on the left may be witnessing his charitable acts, or might be members of his retinue.
