This panel is one of two showing St Cuthbert performing good works after his election as bishop of Lindisfarne. In both the Anglo-Saxon period and the fifteenth century, charitable acts were an important duty for clerics, especially bishops. Here, St Cuthbert is shown distributing food and clothing to the poor and disabled. He is helped by a monk, who holds a shirt, and has a basket of bread at his feet.
