This panel is one of three which show an episode where an angel heals St Cuthbert’s knee. The angel is shown arriving on horseback in panel 9d. Here, the angel has dismounted, and is talking to St Cuthbert, who sits on a stool, with two attendants behind him. The angel is probably providing the recipe for a healing poultice, as described by Bede. The angel is shown applying the poultice in panel 9e.
