This panel shows a priest (unusually wearing a mitre) administering holy water that has been blessed by St Cuthbert, to heal the wife of a gesith. The woman lies in bed, supported by another woman, as the priest kneels before her, holding a bowl of holy water. To the left stand another priest and two laymen, one of whom is probably the gesith Hemma (or Heunna). As Cuthbert is not shown blessing the water, the priest may have been shown wearing a mitre to emphasise Cuthbert’s agency in the healing.
