The design of the architectural canopy at the top of this panel shows that it belongs at the top of the window, and shows a scene from Cuthbert’s childhood. In the centre, a boy who is probably St Cuthbert kneels before a bishop. On the left are two female figures, one of whom is probably Cuthbert’s mother, Sabina. On the right are a layman and a priest. The exact subject is uncertain, but the gestures of Sabina and the bishop suggest that she is making him Cuthbert’s guardian.
