On the left, St Cuthbert's mother sits in bed, attended by a midwife. The infant Cuthbert stands on his mother's lap, supported by her and his grandmother, who kneels to the right. God appears above, partly superimposed over the roof, with rays of light shining down into the scene below, focusing the viewer’s eye upon the infant Cuthbert. Cuthbert's birth is also witnessed in a miraculous vision by a bishop, who is shown on the far right of the panel. The bishop was originally set within the cloister, to indicate his location while at prayer when he had a miraculous vision of Cuthbert’s birth.
