This panel is one of eleven designed and made by J.W. Knowles under the direction of Rev. J.T. Fowler in 1886-8. It shows the bishop who witnessed Cuthbert’s birth entrusting St Cuthbert to the care of a layman before his death. He raises his hand in blessing, and looks towards the layman, who rests a hand on Cuthbert’s shoulder. The imagery of the panel, particularly the bed, hangings and costumes, shows how closely Knowles studied the original glass in the window.
