This panel is the first of three showing an angel healing St Cuthbert’s knee. Cuthbert, dressed in blue, is kneeling on the ground between two of his servants and greeting an angel on horseback. In the written versions of this episode, the angel is disguised as a man, but here he is shown with wings and a nimbus to make his identity clear. Cuthbert is kneeling because he has a diseased knee and cannot walk. The angel is shown describing the recipe for a poultice in panel 20a, and healing Cuthbert’s knee in panel 9e.
