This panel is the last in a sequence of three, which show the miracle of an angel helping to heal St Cuthbert’s knee. In written versions of this episode, the angel tells gives recipe for a healing poultice to Cuthbert, who then applies it to his knee. Here, the angel is shown applying the poultice, to emphasise the significance of the healing, which was believed to show that God favoured Cuthbert especially. The angel is shown arriving in panel 9d, and describing the recipe for the poultice in panel 20a.
