This tracery panel was designed and made by J.W. Knowles under the direction of Rev. J.T. Fowler in 1886-8. It shows St Paulinus (d.644), an Anglo-Saxon monk who became the first bishop of York. He is shown wearing a pallium and holding a cross-staff because he was appointed Archbishop of York. But he actually had to leave York shortly before he received the pallium, after the Christian King Edwin of Northumbria was defeated in battle by the pagan King Penda.
