This tracery panel was designed and made by J.W. Knowles under the direction of Rev. J.T. Fowler in 1886-8. It shows St Edward the Confessor (1003-66), a King of England who was renowned for his holiness. His cult was incredibly popular during the medieval period and he appears in several medieval windows within York Minster. Knowles has represented him holding a ring, in reference to a miracle where Edward gave his ring to a beggar, who was St John in disguise. A fifteenth-century figure of St Edward holding a ring is shown on the shrine of St Cuthbert in panel 23e.
