This tracery panel was designed and made by J.W. Knowles under the direction of Rev. J.T. Fowler in 1886-8. It shows St Katherine, a Christian martyr, who is said to have lived in the 4th century. Her cult was incredibly popular across Europe throughout the medieval period. Knowles has represented her with a wheel, one of the instruments of her torture, which miraculously broke, sparing her. This was a common way of depicting Katherine in the medieval period and a similar image was included in one of the lost fifteenth-century tracery panels.
