The King, standing to the right, is identified by his crown and a fragment of his distinctive shield of a cross and golden martlets displayed on his blue undergarment. His white cloak, decorated with silver-stained lozenges, is heavily leaded but substantially complete. In his right hand is the ring which is offered to a rather richly dressed beggar, actually St John the Evangelist in disguise, according to the well-known legend of saintly King’s charity. St John wears a tufted white cloak. The figures are displayed against a rich trellised background in ruby and blue.
