During a catastrophic fire in the Minster, a huge timber fell on the sarcophagus (which stood proud of the floor) and broke the lid. Burning wood fell on William’s body, but neither his vestments nor his body were harmed, to the astonishment of all. The panel shows William’s body intact, with red flames rising from it in three places. The crowd of witnesses are all lay people, five men and one woman. This was the first of William’s posthumous miracles, according to the Life.
