The tomb was opened during the night in the presence of Archbishop William Wickwane and Antony Bek, bishop of Durham, accompanied by the dean and canons of the Minster. Taking the lid off the sarcophagus, they removed the bones of the saint and placed them in a chest. The panel shows William’s long-bones being kissed by the Minster clergy and being placed in the chest by the bishop and the archbishop. The translation of the relics took place on 8 January 1284.
