Archbishop Thurstan (1114-1140) lies on his death-bed, conforming even in death to the artistic convention that archbishops wear mitres. Around him are canons of the Minster in postures of grief. Two of them behind the bed wear white choir robes with ermine tippets; others have sleeved robes of white fabric, the colour of mourning. The canon closing Thurstan’s eyes may be intended for William.
