At Winchester, William kneels in prayer before an altar, on which is a diptych of the Annunciation. He is accompanied (from left to right) by a canon in white choir robes, a hooded figure, a Benedictine monk (with blue habit and monastic tonsure), a lesser cleric, and (on the right) a verger holding a staff. The monk represents one of the monks of Winchester Cathedral, or Henry of Blois, the bishop of Winchester and papal legate, who was himself a Benedictine monk.
