William is consecrated in Winchester Cathedral by Henry of Blois and another bishop, who place his mitre on his head. On either side stand a canon and an abbot (with crozier), distinguished by their respective tonsures and different white choir robes. As in panel 3b, William is shown wearing the pallium, which he had yet to receive (see panels 4d and 4e). Artistic convention conflicts with historical fact.
