Even on his death-bed, the pope is shown wearing the papal triple tiara. He is surrounded by grieving cardinals robed in blue and wearing red cardinals' hats. With the pope’s death, Cardinal Hincmar’s legatine commission lapsed, and he returned to Rome without having delivered the pallium to William. However, his return journey is not depicted. In all of the row 5 panels the coloured backgrounds continue up into the cusped panels of row 6, immediately below the transom, and the scenes are framed by the architectural canopies within the cusping.
