It was customary for distinguished visitors to be greeted by the civic authorities outside Micklegate Bar. William approaches on horseback, again accompanied by his cross-bearer and two laymen. The mayor, with a long forked beard, emerges from the gateway with two other officials, one of whom holds the sword of state, an anachronistic symbol of his authority which was only granted to the mayor in the late 14th century.
