As William crossed Ouse Bridge ahead of a large crowd, the wooden bridge gave way, catapulting people and horses into the river. William turned round, made the sign of the cross, and prayed that no-one should be drowned. William and his cross-bearer dominate the scene, leaving little room for the crowd, none of whom have been thrown into the river by the modest damage to the bridge. The bridge is shown anachronistically as made of stone.
